How is BMI calculated?

For metric measurements:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)

Example: A person weighing 65 kg with a height of 1.70 m has:

BMI = 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.49
Important: BMI is a screening measure and does not directly measure body fat or diagnose a health condition. The adult categories on this calculator should not be used to assess children or teenagers. Individual factors such as age, muscle mass and other health considerations may affect interpretation.

How Is BMI Calculated?

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²).

Adult BMI Categories

For adults, a BMI below 18.5 is categorized as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy weight, 25.0 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30.0 or above as obesity.

Is BMI a complete measure of health?

No. BMI is a screening measure and does not directly measure body fat or provide a complete assessment of health. Factors such as age, muscle mass, body composition and individual health conditions may also be important.

Can the same adult BMI categories be used for children?

No. BMI in children and teenagers is interpreted differently and takes age and sex into account. Adult BMI categories should not be directly applied to children.
