How is water intake estimated?

This calculator uses a simple planning estimate rather than claiming that one amount is correct for every adult.

Baseline = Body Weight x 35 mL/kg/day
Exercise Adjustment = 350 mL per 30 minutes of exercise
Hot Weather Adjustment = +500 mL/day when selected

Example for a 70 kg adult exercising for 30 minutes in normal weather:

Baseline:
70 x 35 = 2,450 mL

Exercise:
+350 mL

Estimated Total:
2,800 mL = 2.8 L/day
Important: This is a general fluid-intake estimate, not a medical recommendation. Fluid needs vary with diet, climate, sweating, exercise, pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness and other factors. Some medical conditions involving the kidneys, heart, liver or fluid balance may require individualized fluid limits or targets from a healthcare professional. Fluids from beverages and water-containing foods can both contribute to total intake.

Why Is Water Important?

Water is essential for normal body functions. It contributes to processes such as temperature regulation, nutrient transport and the removal of waste products from the body.

What Can Affect Water Needs?

Water requirements can vary with factors such as body size, physical activity, climate, diet, pregnancy, breastfeeding and health conditions. Hot weather and increased physical activity can also increase fluid needs.

Does all daily fluid have to come from drinking water?

No. Daily fluid intake can come from drinking water, other beverages and foods that contain water. The contribution from each source varies depending on a person's diet.

Is a calculated water intake amount exact?

No. A water intake calculator provides a general estimate and cannot determine an exact requirement for every individual. Personal needs may differ depending on activity, environment and health-related factors.
